Steve McCurry's India

Steve McCurry — one of the most talented photographers and one of the best photojournalists of our time.

He was born in 1950 in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), studied cinematography and filmmaking at Pennsylvania State University and started taking pictures for the student newspaper — The Daily Collegian.

In 1974, Steve received a degree in Performing arts and began to work in a local newspaper.

Steve McCurry became widely known in 1979, after a hazardous journey to Afghanistan. He crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled areas of Afghanistan just before the Soviet invasion. Those images, which were published around the world: Paris Match, Stern, Newsweek, LIFE. His coverage won the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad.

Later McCurry was invited to Time, but after a few months he began to work for National Geographic.

He has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1986.

McCurry continued to cover armed conflicts, including the Lebanon Civil War, the Cambodian Civil War, Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, the Afghan Civil War and the Islamic insurgency in the Philippines.
