3 “Island of Silence and Heat”. Photograph by Carsten Krüger. Your Shot member Carsten Krüger submitted this otherworldly photo of Namibia’s Dead Vlei: withered trees anchored in a white-clay pan, standing in striking contrast to an intensely colored, towering sand dune. The trees have been there for hundreds of years, reminders of when river waters cooled and hydrated this now scorched earth. Krüger writes, “[It was] a surreal island of silence and heat … We hiked one lonely mile without navigation and maps to find Dead Vlei … [It was] a masterpiece of nature: abstract shapes and unbelievable bright colors.”

7 Seeing Red. Photograph by Naing Thu Soe. Interested in observing local tradition and culture in Myanmar (Burma), Naing Thu Soe visited a traditional umbrella works in the port city of Pathein. While documenting the traditional craft with his camera, the Your Shot member witnessed some of the handiwork involved. “I saw a boy binding cotton ropes between [the] umbrella cover and bamboo umbrella bones,” he writes. 8 Grass Light. Photograph by David L. Labrie. Planning to shoot a rare supermoon, Your Shot member David L. Labrie went camping in the wilderness of Quebec, Canada, with his girlfriend, pictured here. Labrie was setting up his equipment when he noticed the high grass in the water. He asked his girlfriend to take the kayak and hold steady while he captured a long exposure. But a small breeze made it difficult to keep the kayak still. “We had to take several before we achieved this result,” he writes.

14 Pebbles on the Beach. Photograph by Joe Navin. “I liked the vivid colors from the parasols and the towels, the curve of the waterline, and the bathers across the scene,” says Joe Navin, who took this shot from a road above a beach in Ortigia, Sicily. “The road gives an unusual perspective for a beach shot and it worked well with a wide-angle lens, so it was quite quick to frame and shoot.”

17 Bear Jam. Photograph by Aaron Huey. A mother grizzly and her cubs cause a “bear jam” on Denali National Park and Preserve’s 92-mile-long Park Road, open to private vehicles only five days each summer. At their first stop, Bryce Canyon National Park, they hiked the Navajo Loop Trail. “This view opened up as this trail turned into a twisting and winding [path] to the bottom of the valley below,” he says. “The setting sun's golden light bounced all over the red rock walls of the canyon.”

21 A Mossy Bed. Photograph by Jacob Anderson. Endangered New Zealand sea lions are often found in the rata forests of their home nation’s Auckland Islands. Thanks to myriad threats—climate stress, disease, and fishing hazards—their population is significantly down from historical levels. Your Shot member Jacob Anderson came across this animal near Ranui Cove on the northeast coast of Auckland Island. True to the species’ reputation of being bold around humans, the sea lion was unbothered while lounging on a rich bed of green moss.

23 Flash of White. Photograph by Cindy Herzog. A blurry flash caught Your Shot member Cindy Herzog’s eye as she and her husband drove along Montana’s Ennis Lake. “I had to investigate,” she writes. That flash turned out to be a white short-tailed weasel, also known as a stoat, identifiable by its black-tipped tail. “I realized what I was looking at so I started to whistle,” says Herzog. “The weasel darted in and out, over and under the log, stopping only for a few seconds to listen.”
