Master of Surrealism - Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe

Eikoh Hosoe is a Japanese photographer and filmmaker who emerged in the experimental arts movement of post-World War II Japan.

He was born on 18 March 1933 in Yonezawa, Yamagata.

Eikoh Hosoe opened his interest for photography and began to catch his view of the world in 15 years old. He was the winner among the students in the competition “Fuji Photo Contest” in 1951, organized by Fujifilm.

In 1954, Eikoh Hosoe received a diploma in Tokyo Polytechnic University. In 1956 had his first solo exhibition titled “An American Girl in Tokyo”.

A few years later, Eikoh Hosoe with his adherents Kikuji Kawada, Akira Sato, Akira Tanno, Shomei Tomatsu and Ikko Narahara opened the photo agency VIVO.

In the 50s Hosoe most of the time shooting in the studio, organized his exhibition, and repeatedly became the winner of numerous contests.

Eikoh Hosoe has been the director of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Kiyosato, Yamanashi) since its opening in 1995.
